Context of Practice Seminar - 21/10/11

For the seminar we were each asked to bring in 8 different examples of design work to help us understand the purposes and different aspects of crit sessions and critiquing work. The 4 categories of work we needed to bring in were photography, illustration, logo design and typography (2 examples of each).
These are the examples I chose:

Photography:
Man Ray - Le Violon d'Ingres

Tim Walker - Lily Takes A Trip
Illustration:
Quentin Blake - The BFG

Irma Gruenholz
Logo design:
Vans Logo

DSB Danish/Swedish Train Company Logo

Typography:

Sveinn Davidsson - Grindavik

Varsity Type

What is a crit?
  • analysing work
  • making a judgement
  • giving constructive feedback
  • suggestions
  • personal opinions
Why do we crit work?

  • group problem solving
  • getting new perspectives on work
  • to learn from previous mistakes
  • ensuring ideas are legible and understandable
  • gaining confidence in your work
  • keeping you going in the right direction with your work
  • teaching you how to present your work
Then, through different exercises with the images we brought in, in pairs we came up with lists of important questions to ask in crits:

  • What is the desired reaction to the work?
  • Does it fit to the target audience?
  • What is the concept?
  • What research influenced the work?
  • What are you trying to communicate?
  • What is the function/purpose of the work?
  • What context would the design be used in?
  • What problem are you trying to solve?
